Beschreibung

Der Vortrag wurde anlässlich der Messe Automotive Testing Expo 2011 in Stuttgart im Open Technology Forum in englischer Sprache gehalten.

Measurement data management systems cover many different aspects of dealing with data: collecting, storing, shaping, exposing, retrieving, browsing, updating, providing for analysis and evaluation, archiving. Many of these functions are provided by back-office services, implemented by software specialists and operated by IT business staff. There are different types of users or roles, who apply these functions: measurement data requestors, producers, consumers and administrators. A development engineer, e.g. an engine developer or a vehicle dynamics developer, covers the requestor and consumer roles. His main business is the development process. Any time consuming activities that constrain him from doing this job reduce his efficiency. He does not need to worry about data storage details or ASAM ODS application models, data formats or system interfaces. This depicted scenario is an ideal, but the common reality is different: user interfaces expect explicit input, the execution of functions requires a profound knowledge of underlying data structures and data interfaces. The consequence is a reluctant usage and a lack of acceptance of such a measurement data management system.

Based on our measurement data integration platform (ISTEC.MIP) we are designing a new kind of user interface for development engineers that overcomes common retrieving and browsing functions for measurement data. The principle is well known and successfully established: internet search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo ask for catchwords and deliver a ranked result list. Every result list entry represents a linked document. Each entry summarizes the context of the given catchwords within the according document. Such a document can be a real document (e.g. PDF file) or a virtual document (e.g. a web page or a parameterized start-up of an evaluation tool). The precondition for such a user interface is the treatment of each kind of measurement result as a document.
