Measurement data management systems cover many different aspects of dealing with data: collecting, storing, shaping, exposing, retrieving, browsing, updating, providing for analysis and evaluation, archiving. Such systems may be based on ASAM ODS, possibly realized with the MDM framework, or individually developed to match special customer requirements. When implementing measurement data management systems and integrating such systems into heterogeneous customer environments we often encounter the following OEM scenario: In addition to the measurement data management system a variety of databases and systems that provide additional information do exist, e.g. a vehicle information system, a test equipment management system or a supplier database. Retrieving a particular set of data requires subsequent single queries on each database involved. Every database or system comes with its own user interface and query frontend. This process is very time consuming. To ease the integration of different data sources in one common system we are developing a measurement data integration platform (ISTEC.MIP). Integration means enabling joined queries over heterogeneous data sources - either predefined or designed as needed. Joined query results are displayed in flat or hierarchical grids. Results can be exported, e.g. to MS Excel, or forwarded to analysis and evaluation tools. Access to the different data sources is established via the Open Data Protocol (OData). Relational or object relational databases can be exposed using simple OData providers whereas ASAM ODS servers or other API equipped systems require a custom OData provider. An essential benefit of client side joining over different data sources is omitting data redundancy. For example you do not need descriptive data of a vehicle in a measurement data management system because such information already exists in a specific vehicle database.
