PA recently held the Greening Business event in London called, "Electric Vehicles: Fact or Fiction?," to discuss the challenges and solutions of mass EV adoption. Some conclusions drawn from the event include:
- In the short-term, EV penetration will remain limited to early adopters and high income earners. It has yet to be proven that consumers are prepared to pay a premium for electric vehicles. Until the Model T-Ford of EVs becomes available for personal mobility, EVs will always be competing against cheaper conventional vehicles.
- By supplying EV infrastructure, utilities (electricity suppliers and network businesses) could unlock the key to an established EV market and tap into a new revenue stream. However, utilities still face a degree of uncertainty over this new business model. A dynamic billing option must be found that will suit a competitive electricity market, such as in the UK, and so that travel plans will not be restricted to supplier service, such as in the US.
